Respond to Best-Selling Author Mitch Albom's Father's Day Hate Piece

Date: July 8th, 2010

Mitch Albom is a syndicated journalist and the author of the popular book, "The Five People You Meet in Heaven". A visit to his website shows a person actively marketing himself an inspirational man of faith, but a Father's Day column published in the Detroit Free Press (and other newspapers which carrying Mr. Albom's writings) reveals a darker side of this individual.

This column, entitled "Father's Day Needs More Real Fathers" (which can be found at: http://www.freep.com/article/20100620/COL01/6200481/Father%5C-s-Day-needs-more-real-fathers) steals a page from champion hater Barack Obama's playback by using Father's Day as a day to attack dads. In it, Albom laments the absence of dads in homes and blames absent dads for crime. "It makes me furious, it should make you furious" writes Albom, exhorting his readers to join him in his Father's Day hatefest.

But Albom never once mentions in his column how many millions of fathers are kept out of their childrens' lives by mothers who engage in parental alienation, nor does he mention any of the laws or government agencies which aid and abet alienation.

A search on the internet does not provide any links to any similar articles by Albom which may have been written on Mother's Day. It does, however, provide us with several quotes from his books which reveal Mr. Albom's maternally biased mindset:

" ... behind all your stories is always your mother's story, because hers is where yours begin."

"When you look into your mother’s eyes, you know that is the purest love you can find on this earth."

Either Mr. Albom has not heard of the many notorious mothers who've made headlines for murdering, abusing, and neglecting their children, or he chooses not to acknowledge them.

Because Mr. Albom is so influential (his books have sold over 28 million copies and he has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show), we believe it is important for divorced dads and non-custodial parents to keep him properly informed about the realities of broken families.

What You Can Do:

Complaints can be lodged with Mr. Albom via his website at: http://mitchalbom.com/d/contact.

Additional complaints can be sent to the editor of The Detroit Free Press via its website at: http://www.freep.com/article/99999999/opinion04/50926009.

The Detroit Free Press may also be called at 313-222-6400, or faxed at: 313-222-5981.

Fight Against Parental Alienation in Utah

Date: February 22th, 2010

NCPForce! has received a request for help from Brian Nathan Godfrey at 2 to ♥ A Child (TWO TO LOVE A CHILD) - The Parental Allies 4 Children!

As of Monday Feb 22, 2010, the Utah Senate will vote on House Bill Custodial Interference Amendments (HB0197S01) which may help prevent custodial parents from interfering with non-custodial parents visiting time.

Your help is needed to get it passed.

By approx. 4PM Monday, there will be a meeting of the Utah Senate Judiciary, Law Enforcement, and Criminal Justice Standing Committee. They will be deciding whether they want to favor the bill or not. If they vote against the bill, then it's likely dead. Their meeting will be open to the public at 250 State Capital, Utah State Capital Complex (250 is possibly a room numberas opposed to a street address) in the main capital building (to the South and in-between the Senate and the House buildings).

*** WHAT YOU CAN DO ***

Contact Committee Members Before 40pm Monday (2/22/2010).

Send them an email and/or call them and leave them a message saying (if nothing else), to "please favorably recommend the Custodial Interference Amendments bill".

Committee members email addresses are as follows:

Mark Madsen - mmadsen@utahsenate.org
Jon Greiner - jgreiner@utahsenate.org
Lyle Hillyard - lhillyard@utahsenate.org
Benjamin McAdams - bmcadams@utahsenate.org
Ross Romero - rromero@utahsenate.org>
Michael Waddoups - waddoups@utahsenate.org

Their phone numbers are:

Sen. Mark B. Madsen: (801) 361-4787 (office).

Sen. Lyle W. Hillyard: (435) 753-0043 (home), (435) 752-2610 (office).
Sen. Benjamin M. McAdams: (801) 618-1946 (home), (801) 359-2544 (office).
Sen. Ross Romero: (801) 364-2451 (home), (801) 844-7229 (office).
Sen. Michael Waddoups: (801) 967-0225 (home), (801) 355-1136 (office).

*** Plan For & Attend the Monday (2/22/2010) 4:10pm Committee Meeting ***

The meeting will be in room #250 in the North East corner of the main capital building (that's to the South and in between the Senate and the House buildings).

There's a map of the capital complex available online to help find the room.

Dress respectably and come ready to testify if you can.

Just having more people in attendance makes a helpful difference and in the House committee meeting for this bill the committee asked for a show of hands of who's in favor of this bill.

Arizona House Bill 2348: Write, Call to Support Legislation to Protect Disabled Fathers from Family Court Abuses

Date: January 26th, 2010

Arizona HB 2348 will help protect disabled fathers (and mothers) from child support and alimony abuses—to email and fax a letter in support of the bill, click here.

The hearing on the bill is Wednesday January 27, so please act ASAP. This is a national issue and supporters both inside and outside of Arizona are encouraged to participate.

Although federal law is clear, judges are often ignoring it and calculating veterans’ disability compensation into divorce settlements as a divisible asset. Very often these payments are the only assets a veteran has. When judges include it as income, it creates great hardship for those veterans, who rarely have the resources to hire legal help to contest the taking of their benefits. HB 2348 will help end this practice—to email and fax a letter in support of the bill to all members of the Arizona House Military Affairs and Public Safety Committee to express your support for HB 2348, click here. To call the Committee members, click here.

Veterans' service-connected disability compensation is intended to financially compensate a military veteran disabled in the line of duty. This compensation is not an asset, or property—it is awarded to a veteran that has lost some/all physical or mental ability to work, or maintain a daily routine. Veterans’ disability compensation is tax exempt and not classified as 'income' by the IRS. Under federal law, VA disability compensation is non-transferable and cannot be awarded to a third party under any legal process whatsoever. VA Disability compensation is not remuneration for employment, and it belongs solely to the disabled veteran that has suffered the disability. Many family court judges are ignoring all of this—to email and fax a letter in support of the bill to allmembers of the Arizona House Military Affairs and Public Safety Committee to express your support for HB 2348, visit http://www.fathersandfamilies.org/?page_id=5734#takeaction. To call the Committee members, http://www.fathersandfamilies.org/?page_id=5734#call.

Last year Fathers & Families’ legislative representative Michael Robinson successfully worked to pass California SB 285 (sponsored by Democratic Senator Rod Wright), which protected disabled veterans’ VA disability compensation. Advocates and legislators from several other states have contacted us about SB 285, seeking to pass similar legislation in their states. Arizona House Member Frank Antenori’s HB 2348 is the first of these to make it to committee.

To email and fax a letter in support of the bill to all members of the Arizona House Military Affairs and Public Safety Committee to express your support for HB 2348, http://www.fathersandfamilies.org/?page_id=5734#takeaction.

F & F is also working with advocates and legislators on similar legislation in Texas and New Mexico, and is laying the groundwork for legislation in Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Indiana, and Illinois. It also appears that a failed 2009 legislative effort in Iowa has been revived by CA. SB 285’s passage. In addition, a U.S. Congressman has taken up this issue and we are helping him craft a federal bill which we expect will be introduced in the near future.

The abuses being committed in family court concerning disabled parents’ VA benefits remind many F & F supporters of their own experiences in family court—a lack of respect for the law, violations of due process, fathers (and sometimes mothers) being financially plundered and shook down for money they don’t owe, etc.

Date: December 13th, 2009

In a recent hate piece, "Deputies Round Up Deadbeat Dads", reporter Andrew Hasbun of FOX 10 News promoted debtor's prisons for non-custodial parents and purposefully edited his reportage to deny a father --who was arrrested for child support arrears -- his chance to tell his side of the story.

Get Parental Alienation Included in New Psychiatric Manual of Mental Disorders

Date: December 13th, 2009

We are passing along information on this campaign which came to us via Glenn Sacks of Fathers & Families.org:

"A group of 50 mental health experts from 10 countries are part of an effort to add Parental Alienation to the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM V), the American Psychiatric Association’s 'bible' of diagnoses. According to psychiatrist William Bernet, adding PA 'would spur insurance coverage, stimulate more systematic research, lend credence to a charge of parental alienation in court, and raise the odds that children would get timely treatment'."

Fight Hate at Esquire Magazine

Date: November 7th, 2009

Back in September 2009, Glenn Sacks of the website/advocacy group Fathers & Families.com alerted his readers to an article about swine flu published by Esquire magazine which suggested that only moms, and not dads, will have to take care of sick children when they come down with swine flu.

Glenn called upon his readers to write to Esquire, asking the editorial staff to change the wording of the article in the web edition of the magazine. To date, the magazine has refused to address this sensitive issue.

To see Glenn's action alert and to read more about Esquire's subliminal hate-mongering, visit: http://www.fathersandfamilies.org/?p=4598. And while you're there, please sign up for Glenn's newsletter and stay on top of the issues.

To read the Esquire article "The Real Worst-Case Scenario for Swine Flu 2.0", visit: http://www.esquire.com/the-side/war-room/swine-flu-death-090309?click=main_sr.

To give Esquire hell, write Esquire Magazine at esquireeditor@hearstcorp.com.

You can also call editor-in-chief David Granger at 212-649-4270 and his assistant at 212-649-4271.

Remind them it's time to change “moms” to “moms and dads” or “parents.”

Another way of contacting the magazine is by clicking on http://www.esquire.com/talk and going to “The Editors” in the drop down menu.

ABOUT NCP FORCE! (Non-Custodial Parents Force)

Our organization is a non-profit, grassroots action organization dedicated to reforming America's family law system.

While we frequently refer to divorced fathers, who overwhelmingly bear the brunt of abuses in the family law system, we champion the cause of all non-custodial parents, be they unwed fathers, non-custodial mothers, grandparents, or assigned parentage fathers (men who are held responsible for parentage despite the fact that they are not biological fathers).

Unlike many other family law websites which claim to help divorced dads and NCP's, we will never ask our visitors for money or donations. We also do not charge for, or offer legal services. Instead we provide a virtual base of operations, forum, and information clearing house for visitors to help themselves free of charge.

Learn more about joining the NCP Force! It's free and no personal questions will be asked unless you wish to share your family law experiences with us.
